Stained and Decorative Concrete in Cibolo
Not every concrete floor needs a thick coating. Stains, dyes and thin decorative overlays can transform plain concrete — inside or out — while keeping its character, and they suit spaces where a seamless, natural look matters more than a garage-style flake finish.

Stain, dye or overlay
Acid stains react chemically with the lime in the concrete to produce mottled, earthy tones — browns, tans and soft greens — that look a little different everywhere. The variation is the point: no two floors match, and the result reads as natural stone rather than paint.
Water-based stains and dyes give a wider range of colors and more predictable results. They are often used indoors, on converted garages and on concrete floors in newer homes, where a consistent color is preferred.
Overlays are a thin cement-based layer applied over existing concrete. They cover stains, patches and minor surface damage that a stain would only highlight, and they can then be colored, textured or scored into patterns.
The right choice depends on the condition of the slab you start with, and a short test is the most reliable way to see it.

Why every slab stains differently
A stain is not a coating that hides the concrete; it soaks into it. Everything about the slab — its age, how it was finished, old patches, glue from removed flooring, even where a rug sat for years — shows through. That is the charm of a stained floor, and also its risk.
This is why experienced installers do a test area first. Ten minutes on a hidden corner of your floor tells you more about the final color than any photograph.
If the slab has a lot of damage or patching, an overlay first and a stain on top gives a far more even result than staining the original surface.

Indoors and outdoors
Inside, stained concrete is popular in converted garages, game rooms and homes where the original slab was exposed when carpet or tile came up. It is durable, easy to clean and stays cool — a real advantage in a Texas summer.
Outside, stains and sealers refresh patios, walkways and entries without adding a film that could peel or get slippery. UV-stable sealers keep the color from washing out in the sun.
Scoring the concrete into tiles, borders or simple patterns adds a lot of visual interest for relatively little cost, and it can also help hide or direct future hairline cracks.

Protection and upkeep
Every stained floor needs a sealer. Indoors this is often a durable clear topcoat or a sealer plus floor wax; outdoors it is a breathable, UV-resistant sealer. The sealer is what takes the wear, and it is renewed periodically so the stain underneath stays protected.
Clean with a neutral cleaner rather than harsh chemicals, use pads under furniture legs and mats at doors where grit comes in. Most wear on stained concrete is grit grinding against the sealer.
When a stained floor starts to look dull, a clean and a fresh coat of sealer usually brings it back without re-staining.

What moves the price
A single-color stain on a clean, newer slab is the simplest decorative job. Cost rises with surface repairs, removal of old flooring adhesive, the number of colors, scored patterns and borders, and the choice between a simple sealer and a heavy-duty topcoat.
Overlays add material and labor because they rebuild the surface before any color goes on. They are worth it when the existing concrete is too damaged to stain well, and unnecessary when it is in good shape.
Interior work in an occupied home also needs planning: furniture moved, rooms closed off and odor from some sealers managed while they cure.
Before choosing a decorative finish, think about what will sit on the floor. Heavy furniture, rolling chairs and pets all affect which sealer is right, and a durable topcoat in high-traffic areas keeps the color looking fresh much longer than a basic sealer alone.
How we work
Step by step
- 01
Talk through the space, the look you want and how it is used
- 02
Test area or samples on your actual concrete
- 03
Cleaning, grinding and repair
- 04
Stain, dye or overlay applied in layers
- 05
Sealer or topcoat, then cure before traffic and furniture
What it costs
Stained and decorative concrete is priced by area, condition and complexity — a single-color stain on clean concrete is far simpler than an overlay with scored patterns. Expect a sample or test area to be part of the estimate on larger jobs.
Questions
Stained & Decorative Concrete — asked and answered
Will stained concrete hide stains and patches?
No — stain soaks into the concrete, so existing marks and patches show through. If the slab is badly marked, a thin overlay before staining gives a more even result.
Is stained concrete slippery?
Sealed concrete can be slick when wet, especially with a high-gloss sealer. Anti-slip additives in the sealer improve traction, particularly outdoors.
Can I stain my garage floor instead of coating it?
You can, but a garage with hot tires and oil drips is usually better served by a coating. Stain is best where appearance matters and the floor sees lighter use.
Can stained concrete go outdoors?
Yes. Outdoors, a UV-resistant, breathable sealer protects the color and is renewed every few years.
